Learn Zcash
Understand how Zcash keeps payments private and how we bring those privacy protections to our wallet — shielded payments, Unified Addresses, and safe backups.
What is Zcash?
Zcash is a blockchain designed around a simple idea: money in the digital world should work like money in the real world — useful, fast, and private when needed. When Bitcoin introduced decentralized digital cash in 2009, it was revolutionary, but it had one major limitation: every transaction and balance was visible to anyone. That transparency helped bootstrapping trust in a new technology, but it also meant that financial activity on public blockchains became traceable, linkable, and permanently stored. As crypto adoption grew, it became clear that people, communities, and businesses needed a way to use digital currency without exposing their entire financial history.
Private payments
Send ZEC without exposing the sender, receiver, or amount.
Shielded on-chain
Zero-knowledge proofs confirm transactions while keeping details hidden.
In 2016, a group of cryptographers and engineers who worked on the first practical zero-knowledge proof systems launched Zcash — the first blockchain where privacy isn't an optional layer, but a built-in capability. Zcash uses advanced "zero-knowledge" cryptography to allow payments to be verified without revealing who sent them, who received them, or how much was sent. You can choose transparency when you want public accountability — or shield your activity when financial privacy matters, just like handing someone cash.
Privacy Technology
Zero-Knowledge Proofs
Zcash uses zk-SNARKs to verify transactions without exposing the sender, receiver, or amount. The network checks that payments are valid without seeing private data, so transfers stay encrypted while remaining fully verifiable.
Encrypted Transactions
Transaction data, including balances, addresses, and memos, is encrypted on-chain. This prevents observers from tracing payments or linking activity across accounts while still allowing the network to confirm correctness.
Viewing Keys and Selective Disclosure
Users can share transaction details only when needed using view keys. You can give read-only access to auditors, services, or recovery tools without exposing your full history or revealing unrelated payments.
